“Trust me, Ms. Baird?”
“Not when you smile like that.”

THE STORY: Charlotte Baird has hidden herself in ill fitting clothes and a mousey personality. After a horrible incident in her past, Charlotte set about protecting herself in as many ways as possible. Her steady date for the past year is more interested in talking about his hobbies than getting physical with Charlotte and that is the way she likes it. When the failing company she works for hires a new CEO to turn around the company, Charlotte is intimidated by the large athletic strong man. She nicknames him T-Rex as he chews up the upper ranks of the company.

Gabriel Bishop is an ex-professional rugby player who has made a name for himself as a turnaround artist for failing companies. Gabriel is protective of the mouse he sees in Charlotte but it intrigued at the glimpses of the strong woman that he sometimes sees.

OPINION: I loved this book because of the strong, complex characters of Charlotte and Gabriel. Their relationship is incredibly beautiful and I really like that their relationship takes time to develop. I appreciated that the book allows the characters to acknowledge the dangers of office romances and especially boss/employee relationships. While those issues are quickly dismissed, the characters at least do acknowledge those issues.

Charlotte’s story is incredibly sad and yet she has survived and managed to create a decent life for herself. I don’t want to give away the exact nature of her past as information is disclosed to readers in the same way that Gabriel learns the truth. The scenes are powerful and heart wrenching.

Gabriel is my favorite part of this book. He is an alpha hero and yet is incredibly thoughtful, caring and protective. He is patient with Charlotte and places her peace of mind above his own desires. For sexy good guy heroes, he is one of the best.

Strong characters and relationships are a hallmark of Singh’s books. Her characters, including those here, are complex multifaceted people. The relationship between these two people is adult and mature. Charlotte and Gabriel talk through their issues and relationship. They are also sexy and sensual. This book is about Charlotte embracing her own sexuality.

For fans of the Thea and David sexy and funny email exchanges from ROCK COURTSHIP (the series novella) will be pleased that there are similar exchanges of written correspondence in this book. While not as extensive or clever as in ROCK COURTSHIP, there are some sweet and funny moments between Charlotte and Gabriel that made me smile.

WORTH MENTIONING: The events of ROCK HARD take place at the same time as those in the first book in the series ROCK ADDICTION.

FINAL DECISION: I loved this book because of Charlotte and Gabriel. Their story made me smile and cry. They are fully realized complex characters. Gabriel especially is a wonderful alpha good guy hero who is sexy and patient and caring.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ROCK HARD is the second novel in the Rock Kiss series. It can be read as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give ROCK HARD 4.5 stars.

The Gentleman of Rock Is a Hero To Cheer For

ROCK COURTSHIP continues the intense, adult relationships that Singh started in the first book in the Rock Kiss series. This novella is less intense than the first book, but her strong characters make this a page turner as the two create a relationship that can withstand the intense and difficult rock music life.

THE STORY: David Rivera is known as the “Gentleman of Rock”. He is the drummer of the Schoolboy Choir but prefers a quieter life than his band mates. David has wanted Thea Arsana since he met her. The only problem is that Thea is the band’s publicist and Thea has a rule never to get involved with clients. David is devastated when Thea rejects his overtures. Four months later, Thea’s half sister (the heroine from ROCK ADDICTION) tells David that he should write Thea a memo about the reasons Thea should give David a chance. Thea can’t help but respond, and thus the relationship between the two begins.

OPINION: I loved this story. David is an unusual hero. He is shorter than Thea and he is more subdued, cerebral and quiet than one might expect of a rock star. That being said he and Thea are really hot together and I loved how David is completely accepting of Thea. It is Thea who has the trust issues in this relationship courtesy of an ex-fiancé who cheated on her and demeaned her as a woman. David accepts Thea’s soft side but also loves her aggressive hard-assed side. From the beginning, he is so dedicated to her that a reader can’t help but root for him to overcome all of Thea’s fears and insecurities.

I loved seeing the guys from the band again and I look forward to reading more about them in future books. This novella wasn’t as compelling as the longer ROCK ADDICTION, but I loved David and Thea and thought their story was sweet and sexy.

WORTH MENTIONING: I absolutely loved the literary device of having David and Thea communicate via memos emailed back and forth. It was incredibly sweet and sexy.

FINAL DECISION: Rock Courtship is a great addition to Singh’s Rock Kiss series. The story is more conventional than the first book, but the romance is incredibly sweet. For me, the highlight was David as a hero. He is not a beta hero but a girl has got to like a man who can blush.

CONNECTED BOOKS: This is the second in the Rock Kiss series. Rock Addiction, the first novel, was the story of Molly and Fox and takes place concurrently with the events in Rock Courtship. It can be read independent of the first book, but ROCK ADDICTION is so incredible, a reader should start there.

STAR RATING: I give this one a 4.5 stars.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in order to provide an honest review of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Determined to Dislike It But Won Me Over Completely

I never would have chosen to read ROCK ADDICTION if I hadn’t gotten a free review copy. Each of us have books that we choose to read because we know and trust the author or the blurb on the back appeals to our archetypes or themes or situations we prefer. The rake/wallflower romance, the angst filled storylines, the friends to lovers trope. Then there are those archetypes or themes that we prefer to avoid. This book would not have appealed to me. Hard rocker, heavily tattooed guys are not my thing and nothing else suggested that this would be a keeper for me. Lately, however, I have been trying to expand my reading horizons and when I saw that Nalini Singh, who I have seen mentioned as an author to read, had a new book that could be read as a standalone and when I could get a preview copy for free, I decided to give it a try.

THE STORY: Molly Webster is a librarian and fulfills all of the stereotypes of the profession. She lives a blameless and boring life. As a teenager, her family was shattered by her father’s publicized affair with an underage girl and as a result, Molly is determined to live her life out of the limelight of the press. But then she goes to a party her sister is hosting and sees him…

Zachary Fox is everything that Molly is determined to stay away from. He is a bad boy rocker with a sexy reputation and a tattooed body. He lives in the light of the press. Fox and Molly have one of those lust at first sight moments and Molly decides to agree to a one-night stand before settling down finally into her quiet life. Fox has other ideas. He is determined not to let Molly go.

OPINION: I absolutely loved this book. The story is all about how Molly and Fox learn to live together and trust one another even as they love. It is a personal book delving deep into the give and take of their relationship. Fox falls for Molly quickly and it is he who is determined to not let Molly go. I loved how mature their relationship is. As obstacle after obstacle is tossed in their path, the two talk to one another, admit their fears and faults and build a strong trust between them. There are no magic solutions. The two struggle with their pasts and fears, but are determined that their relationship is more important than anything.
This book is super sexy. Hot, hot, hot! Scorching in fact, but there is such a wonderful balance between the sex and the emotional relationship that the sex does not feel gratuitous – even as it is quite plentiful!

WORTH MENTIONING: The secondary characters are clearly set up for books of their own. Molly’s half sister and her best friend have romances that are concurrent to this one and I expect will be the subject of the other books in the series.

FINAL DECISION: I recommend this book. It was not at all what I expected. The book was complex and the characters were mature and I loved that the book dealt with the working out of their relationship. I will definitely be reading the subsequent books in this series and now I am definitely going to check out Nalini Singh’s other series for which she is well-known.

CONNECTED BOOKS: This book is the first book in the Rock Kiss series.

STAR RATING: I give this book a 5 star rating which means that it is a definite re-read for me.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in order to provide an honest review of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I Found This Book Disturbing In So Many Ways ***Spoiler Warning***

“But he didn’t really know her, or about the things that had happened in her life to make her a woman of strength and character, a woman who at only twenty-three was one of England’s most successful fashion designers while still managing to be what she loved best of all, an attentive and loving mother to Dani.”

FINAL DECISION: I could not like this book. The discussion and consequence of rape was too dated to be acceptable to me. In addition, for a woman who claims to be so strong, Willow felt entirely dominated by her rapist husband.

THE STORY: Willow Stewart is a fashion designer with a young daughter. Recently divorced, Willow has dark secret that is painful and shameful to her. When her ex-husband’s cousin, Jordan St. James begins to want to spend time with her, Willow knows that Jordan hasn’t forgiven her because he believes she trapped his cousin into marriage. Yet Jordan is attracted to Willow himself.

OPINION: This book fails on many levels. Willow was raped by her ex-husband in order to force her into marriage. The fact that she then tries to justify herself staying with him and wanting him to have a relationship with their daughter made me sick. Her justification of this behavior is that she didn’t want her daughter exposed has being the product of rape. But she wants her daughter to love a rapist as her father. In addition, she claims to be so strong from her past, but she folds immediately when her ex-husband begins to threaten her again. The truth is that Willow is weak and needs some serious therapy to deal with her violation. This subject is just too serious to be handled in a book of this length. The romance completely fails because Jordan doesn’t even know about the rape until the end and then everything is resolved in a couple of pages. For me, this is a book that might speak of the time it was written, but would never be acceptable today.

WORTH MENTIONING: I did appreciate that the hero and the villain’s parents believed Willow when the rape was revealed.

Good Storyline, but Romance Feels Incomplete

“Why are you pretending you don’t know me?”

FINAL DECISION: This book has a good storyline and premise but the romance felt flat and incomplete because it was resolved too quickly and without any real emotion.

THE STORY: Velvet Dale is a model who comes to Florida to do a shoot. She is a widow with a young son. There she meets Jerard Daniels, a businessman, who is a widower with a daughter of his own. Jerard confronts Velvet with the fact that the two were lovers several years ago. Velvet does not remember Jerard because she suffered selective amnesia after the death of her husband. Now Jerard is telling Velvet that they were lovers and that she was unfaithful to her perfect fiance. And he doesn’t believe that she actually has amnesia.

OPINION: This book disappointed me because the story was progressing so well until the ending. I was engaged with the story, but the resolution came so quickly and without any real movement in the characters that it felt forced and unnatural. I realized that the problem was that there was no real depth to these characters. The best part of this book was the plot itself but the characters remained distant and unknowable. Because Velvet has amnesia, her true motivations are forever left unknown. Without the drama and emotion, this book left me feeling empty.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book was originally published in the 1980s as a category romance.

Jealousy, Misunderstandings and Relationships Too Complicated to be Believed

FINAL DECISION: This book is well written and strongly compelling. There are so many twists and turns that I couldn’t believe so much could be packed into such a short book. Unfortunately, however, I didn’t buy the relationship between Shay and Lyon. There was too much anger and pain between them to be resolved so quickly.

THE STORY: Shay Flanagan aka as Gypsy was eighteen when she met and fell in love with Lyon Falconer. They began an affair that ended when Lyon ruthlessly told Shay that he would never divorce his wife for her. Shay left him and ended up married to Lyon’s youngest brother instead. Five years later, Shay’s husband has tragically died and Shay is pregnant. Lyon wants Shay back but she never intends to be vulnerable to Lyon again.

OPINION: This book is filled with angst and drama. In fact, Shay spends most of the book hating Lyon. Her strong emotions make it difficult to accept her quick change to love again. Unfortunately, this book is well written but probably too short for the complicated story. I thought everything about it was well written except that I didn’t believe how quickly Shay could forget the husband she so desperately loved to end up again with a man she claimed to hate for 80 percent of the book.

This isn’t a couple I will be thinking about for years despite the claims in the book that they have a romance for the ages.

A Different Kind of Book From Courtney Milan

“Try trading lives with me.”

THE STORY: Tina Chen is a 20 year old college student struggling to finish college. She is also having to care for her family because her mother gives the little money they have to others. Blake Reynolds is 23 years old and a billionaire. He has been in public display since a child when he did commercials for his father’s technology company (think Apple clone). Blake has struggles of his own as he attempts to distance himself from his father’s shadow. When Tina and Blake end up in an argument during a class, Blake proposes that Tina and Blake trade lives. They end up finding out about themselves, their families, and each other. Romance ensues.

OPINION: TRADE ME, a contemporary new adult romance, is not a book I would have picked if it had been written by anyone other than Courtney Milan. Milan, however, has wowed me with her historical romances and I am always willing to give such authors the benefit of the doubt.

TRADE ME is told in two first person voices: Tina and Blake. This is a book where both characters are on a personal journey. I really enjoyed how the secrets in this book are slowly revealed for the reader and the characters themselves. Much of the book feels more like a self discovery book than a romance book, but there is no doubt that this is a romance book. There is a deep connection between Tina and Blake even as Tina wishes to push away from Blake for almost the entire book. Blake feels like the more vulnerable character here perhaps because part of Tina’s coping mechanism is to be the strong character in her family.

This book also addresses many serious issues, but is not an overly serious book itself. It confines its examination of social issues to discussions relevant to the characters which keeps the book from being didactic. I also like how the issues the characters face are not ones that conform to any stereotype. The story also doesn’t conform to the standard response to a trading places type of story: that everyone has it hard. This story doesn’t rely on that easy answer. The problems and the solutions to this story are complex and difficult and feel real.

My minor complaint with the story is that it feels unfinished because it is. There is more to Tina and Blake’s story and so this book feels like the characters have reached a good place, but that their difficulties are not behind them.

WORTH MENTIONING: I really appreciate the interracial romance and they are still rare enough to mention that TRADE ME is one of them.

FINAL DECISION: This book takes a little time for the reader to comprehend what is at issue because the depths of the characters are slow in being revealed. While the characters have a happy ending, they clearly have unfinished business (luckily Book 3 will return to Tina and Blake).

CONNECTED BOOKS: TRADE ME is the first book in the Cyclone series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.

Strong Writing But Dated Characterizations

FINAL DECISION: The writing of this story is strong and in its time it was right in the center of romance books, but not the ages of the heroine (17) and the hero (34) in the contemporary romance is just creepy.

THE STORY: Lauri Prescott is seventeen years old and just started a job in the typing pool. A run in with her boss, Alexander Blair creates sparks. The two agree that they will spend some time together in order that familiarity dampen their reaction to one another. Their story becomes more complicated because Lauri wants to keep their relationship a secret and there are many other secrets surrounding the two.

OPINION: This story is so well written that the dated elements stand out tremendously. I thought the characters were well written and the story was interesting. There are a a lot of secrets that are revealed throughout this story and the twists were fun to see. The romance story was more on the surface and did not dig deep into the emotions of the characters as would be more common in current romance books. The relationship between Alex and Lauri feels really dated. The age different is not as significant as the fact that Lauri is only seventeen. That just feels creepy to me in a contemporary romance. In addition, the discussion the two have where the hero makes a rape joke is just inappropriate. Ultimately, those issues bothered me and the rest of the book was not strong enough for me to overlook it.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book was first printed in the early 1980s as a category romance.

CONNECTED BOOKS: FIRST LOVE, LAST LOVE is a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 2 stars.

Different Type of Book From Mortimer

Longtime readers of Carole Mortimer should be aware this this book is sexier and more explicit than her previous books.

THE STORY: Eva Shaw is a delivery person and brings a package to a house when the door is answered by a half dressed man who instructs her to undress and go to another room and lay down. Eva is shocked to realize that this man believes her to be a call girl. Finn Devlin has been stalked by an ex-girlfriend and is in hiding. When Eva and Finn are trapped together by a snowstorm, the heat between them rises.

OPINION: I liked this story as one time read. The characters and the plot were not compelling enough to compel me to read it again, but I did not regret the time and money I spent on it. The sex in this book is more explicit than previous Mortimer books and I thought that the transition was a little awkwardly expressed in this book. I did like the beginning situation between the characters and I was really interested in the first half of the book. Once the book became focused on the stalking story, I was less interested because I don’t think that the book had the length to fully develop as a suspense story.

WORTH MENTIONING: I loved the beginning of this novella which kept me guessing about what was going on.

FINAL DECISION: I appreciate that Mortimer is stretching out into a different type of romance. The beginning of this novella was a really good setup. I did feel that as the book went on, I was less interested in the outcome of the stalking story than I should have been. The tension just didn’t seem to build up in a way that made me want to turn pages. I liked the new direction Mortimer is taking with this series and I want to see how she develops.

Sexy and Mysterious Lijah Smith Finds His Mate

THE STORY: Callie Morgan has come to Grayson Security because her father is missing and told her to contact Garyson if something happened. Sixth months ago, Callie was the victim at robbery where her boyfriend was murdered. She has been in fear for her life as the criminals are still on the loose. When her father goes missing investigating the identity of the murderer, Callie comes looking for help.

She runs into Lijah Smith. Also know as the Renegade, Lijah owes Callie’s father a great deal. Lijah has a secret that he is keeping from from many people and he disguises himself in plain site with his cowboy hat. When Lijah meets Callie, the two have an intense and instant attraction. But they also have a mystery to solve.

OPINION: This was a good book. I enjoyed reading it. LIjah is an intriguing character and I actually wish that we had gotten to investigate more about his background rather than Callie’s story.

Most of the tension in the story is created by the danger that Callie faces. There is little of these two getting to know one another on any normal basis. At the same time, the suspense tension is good and the pacing of the story felt natural and not rushed.

The book is hot with several graphic sex scenes.

WORTH MENTIONING: There are some appearances and updates on the previous ALPHA couples.

FINAL DECISION: A decent one time read. Enjoyed it but probably won’t read it again.
