MATE CLAIMED is the fourth novel in the Shifters Unbound series. It is the story of Eric Warden, the leader of the Las Vegas Shiftertown. He has a grown son and lost his mate. He sees Iona Duncan, who is half Shifter but masquerading as human. Readers of the series will recall that Shifters are seriously discriminated against by humans and Iona has no desire to subject herself to that along with risking her mother and sister who might face trouble for having hidden her nature. Eric is seriously attracted to Iona immediately and wants to protect her but he knows that if she doesn’t come to terms with her Shifter side soon, she risks becoming feral and losing herself in her animal side completely.

This story was great. It is sexy and really compelling. The discrimination toward Shifters is on full display here. There is also an interesting story dealing with a new group of lupines being moved unwillingly to Shiftertown and the conflicts that arise. What sets these books apart is the detailed world that Ashley has created. Eric and Iona are compelling characters with depth and interest. The heat between these two felines is blazing.

Rating 4.5.

DARK AND DANGEROUS is a collection of novels by six different authors. I give the collection a 4 in total. Below are the individual reviews.

HARD MATED (Jennifer Ashley): This is a novella in Ashley ‘s Shifters Unbound Series. It is the story of Spike, a wildcat Shifter who finds out that he has a cub. The woman who brings him the news is a friend of the mother, Myka. As Shifters do, Spike immediately becomes attached to the cub and wants to do nothing but protect him. Myka and Spike have great chemistry. I enjoyed the story very much. My favorite of the collection. Rating 4.

THE MATING HUNT (Bonnie Vanak) This is the story of Adianna, a werewolf, who was traumatised as a child and is terrified of sex. Kyle has wanted Adrianna for a long time but has a secret that he believes will make them being together impossible. I really liked this story. I have never read this author or series before, but am interested in reading more. Rating 4.

EMBRACE THE DARK (Caris Roane): This is the story Abigail who finds out she is a blood rose, destined to service a vampire. She meets Gerrod who is obsessed with her. The plot of this one was interesting, but I never felt a connection with the characters. Rating 3.

ASSASSIN’S TOUCH (Laurie London): A woman, Neyla, discovers she has latent para-abilities and meets Rickety, an assassin determined to protect the Iron Portal into his world. I never got into this one. The story has a good plot, but the characters did not appeal to me. Rating 3.

SHADOW BOUND (Erin Kellison): This is the story of Adam and Talia. The book is really dark and not to my liking. That is just taste. It seemed really well created, but not what I look for in this type of book. Rating 3.5.

SEDUCE (Felicity Heaton): This is the third book in the Vampire Erotic Theatre series). I’ve never read this author before, but based in this book I picked up some other books on the series. It is a vampire story about Antoine, a vampire, who fears the Bloodlust coming over him as it has done with his brother. He meets Sara who becomes determined to have him. The sexual tension in this book is great. There are memorable characters especially Snow. I immediately had to read more. Rating 4.

Story of Loss and Starting Again

WILD CAT is the third book in the Shifters Unbound Series. It is the story of Cassidy Warden, a feline shifter who is second in command in the Las Vegas Shiftertown. She meets Detective Diego Escobar in an abandoned building where she saves his life. Cassidy’s mate was murdered a year ago. When Diego takes a risk to help Cassidy, she returns the favor by attempting to take care of him among Shifters. The two have a strong attraction physically and also emotionally because both have experienced loss.

This is a good entry into the series. We meet a new group of Shifters who live near Las Vegas. Ashley does a good job of balancing the attraction between the two and Cassidy’s grief. There is an interesting mystery regarding her mate’s death and the appearance of the Fae (enemies of Shifters). Readers of the series will probably be surprised by the quick turn to these people who were not present in the first two books of the series. In fact, readers could begin here without losing much in understanding (although the first two books are definitely worth the read).

You Have to Love the Bears (shifters)

This novella is the story of Ronan, a bear shifter, and Elizabeth, a human. Ronan rescues Elizabeth when someone comes to rob her store. Ronan is arrested because he attacked a human even though he was protecting Elizabeth. As readers of the Shifters series will recall, there is much discrimination against Shifters. This novella is a great addition to the series, however, this story is easier to understand with the background from the prior novels.

I enjoyed this novella, but it was not as good as the prior novels. This novella assumes quite a bit of knowledge. The romance between Ronan and Elizabeth is sweeter than the romances from the prior novels. I enjoyed this story and think that it is a great contribution to the series.

My favorite of the series! I loved the story of Sean Morrissey (a feline Shifter) and Andrea Gray (a lupine Shifter). I have never been a fan of paranormal romances, but I simply love Jennifer Ashley’s series. She has the ability to make the books about the romance between the characters in a manner which allows me to easily accept the weirdness of the story. In fact, Ashley story really is about family and community and racism and the fear of differences. I was impressed that Ashley could incorporate such themes so seamlessly and not make them overwhelm the romance. There is no doubt that the romance is the center of this book.

I’d give this book a 4.5 rating.

An Appetizer for Claire’s Story

“In that charged moment, he was flooded with wishes. He wished he had never met her. He wished she weren’t so beautiful. He wished he were more capable of expressing the emotions he normally crushed down deep inside himself. He wished she would ride away and never come back. He wished, very fervently, that she would come up the stairs and kiss him.”

FINAL DECISION: I liked this book but it suffered for me because it made me want Claire’s book more than I was excited about reading this story. There was nothing particularly wrong with this book, but it raised the anticipation for Claire’s book such that I wanted to read that book more than this one.

THE STORY: Gabriel Woodley, the youngest son, has been obsessed with finding his twin sister since she disappeared. He keenly feels the loss of his sister because he considers her the emotional part of himself. Without his sister, Gabriel has difficulties with personal relationships. Indeed, Gabriel doesn’t want anything or anyone to get in the way of his search for his sister. The one person who threatens his single minded devotion is Juliet Gray. Juliet is a healer who helped save his mother’s life. In gratitude, the Dowager Marchioness of Woodley wants to take Juliet to London to help her find a husband. Juliet agrees only because of the budding romance between her father and the Dowager. For herself, she knows that she cannot hope for marriage because she is already ruined. She cannot help her attraction to Gabriel even as she knows that there is no future in it.

OPINION: Gabriel is a difficult hero to like. He keeps himself emotionally apart from others and his obsession with finding his sister has made him a jerk in other books. Through this book, however, readers get to see that Gabriel loves his sister tremendously and while it makes him disregard others, he has good intensions. As Gabriel falls for Juliet, he finds a new outlet for all that passionate caring. His journey in this book is to turn from his obsession to find meaning in his own life.

Juliet is sweet and independent and too willing to sacrifice herself for others. For a great portion of the book Gabriel doesn’t treat her very well and frankly, I would have smacked him silly. Juliet’s compassion and intelligence makes her a great pair for Gabriel. She moves him in a different direction even as she understands and accepts his obsession.

This book doesn’t feel as grounded in an actual historical period. Because the Woodleys are nontraditional people and so are their friends, the standards and morals of the time don’t really apply to them. I don’t mind these types of historical books – where the historical part is more flavor than accuracy, but I know that some people are particularly disturbed by these types of books.

I was also pleased to see a cameo by characters from the Notorious Flynns series. I have a particular fondness for seeing old characters again. Readers who are not familiar with that series will not be confused.

My only problem with this book is that I would much rather be reading Gabriel’s sister Claire’s book. Her story has been an incredible mystery since the beginning of the series. Her book is next in the series and this book brings forward more questions about what is going on with her. I suspect that I will like this book better after Claire’s mystery is solved and I can concentrate on something other than my questions about Claire.

WORTH MENTIONING: Virgin hero catnip.

CONNECTED BOOKS: Tempted is book 3 of the Wicked Woodleys series. There is an ongoing story in the series regarding Gabriel’s missing twin sister, but enough is recapped here that readers could start with this book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

This is a short story that tells a story of the heroine of PROOF OF SEDUCTION acting in her guise as Madame Esmerelda. It really assumes that you already know the story of PROOF OF SEDUCTION and it is a nice add on to the series but should be read after PROOF OF SEDUCTION.

PRIDE MATES is the first book in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters series. I’m not a fan of paranormal romances. This series is definitely paranormal in nature. It deals with Shifters who are part human and part animal. The characters shift between the two forms.

In PRIDE MATES, Ashley introduces Liam Morrissey (who is a feline) and Kim Fraser (who is fully human). The two meet when Kim is the lawyer defending a Shifter accused of murder. Liam is the leader of a Shifter town near Austin, Texas. Others have detailed the plot and I won’t repeat that here.

While I generally don’t like paranormal romances, I definitely have been converted to a fan of the Shifters series. As is true with her historical romances, Ashley has a tremendous ability to bring a different voice and tone for all of her characters. Without being overly preachy, the book addresses the issues of racism and segregation. At the core of the book, however, is the romance between Liam and Kim.

I highly recommend this book even for those who might be intially reluctant based upon the subject matter.

I’d give this a 3.5 rating. It is a good prelude to Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter series. However, I don’t know that I would have continued to read the rest of the books if I had discovered this short story first. It gives some background on the Shifters, but the story is very abbreviated and not particularly compelling on its own. In short, I would recommend this to fans of the series to fill in some details, but I wouldn’t start a new reader here.

The Story of Love and Secrets

“Her husband. A thief, a highwayman, a criminal. A coldhearted killer.”

FINAL DECISION: I loved this book because of the timeless nature of the love between the hero and heroine. It feels like they were always fated to find one another.

THE STORY: Farah Leigh Mackenzie is an innocent widow who is working as a clerk in Scotland Yard. As a child she loved a boy with whom she was in a orphanage. She was devastated when he died in prison. Now seventeen years later, she meets Dorian Blackwell, the Blackheart of Ben Mar who is a criminal mastermind who worked his way into being one of the wealthiest and influential men in England. Dorian offers Farah the opportunity to avenge her lost love (with whom Dorian was in prison) and deal with a secret that Farah herself has. All she has to do is marry him.

OPINION: This story is built on a sad story of Farah’s lost love. When she meets Dorian, she begins to find that this scarred and hardened man is more complex than she imagined. His friendship with her childhood loves convinces her to trust him and ultimately to marry him. Dorian has emerged from his childhood and young adulthood, scarred both on the outside but also on the inside. His life has compelled him to do bad things, but he is vulnerable to the sweet innocent Farah.

I thought the setup for this book was wonderful. The angst, the drama, the conflict was so good. The weakness of the story is that too many extremely painful parts of Farah and Dorian’s lives are too quickly resolved. What saved the book for me was that the two acknowledged that there will be days of darkness to come.

This book also has interesting secondary characters, some of whom will be the subject of later books.

WORTH MENTIONING: I am a fan of historical books that don’t take place in society ballrooms.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE HIGHWAYMAN is the first book in the Victorian Rebel series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.
