Emotional and Deeply Personal Amish Murder Mystery

FINAL DECISION; I loved this book. The book delves deeply into Kate’s emotional world and the personal connection to the murders being investigated bring out all sorts of difficulties for Kate.

THE STORY: Kate Burkholder, Chief of Police, is called to a horrible accident. An Amish father and two of his children are killed when their buggy is struck by a vehicle. This hit and run accident at first appears tragic but accidental. Soon, however, questions arise and it appears that the “accident” may actually have been murder. Kate is left trying to figure out who would want to murder the husband of her childhood friend.

OPINION: This is a murder that deeply wounds Kate. Because of her personal connection to the victims, Kate’s past is churned up. This is a book all about the churning up of the past. The mystery was really good in this one. It kept me guessing until the end, and honestly I didn’t see the ultimate solution coming. Winding through this mystery are two other personal issues with Kate. Her relationship with John is a prominent part of this story as she needs to decide whether she wants a deeper commitment with him. Also, Kate also finds out that secrets don’t stay buried as the crime that touched her life when she was fourteen is uncovered and she fears that her life will fall apart. I think the best part of these books is the personal connection that makes these books so compelling. This story is too strongly entwined with Kate’s life that it gives great insight into her and also into the case itself. I can find a decent mystery anywhere. It is the extra personal connection that makes this book so compelling.

WORTH MENTIONING: Kate and John’s relationship has a significant turn in this book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HER LAST BREATH is the fifth book in the Kate Burkholder series. It can be read as a standalone although a dark mystery from Kate’s past returns here. Readers would be better served by reading at least the first book in the series first.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Very Creepy Crime Thriller in Amish Country

FINAL DECISION: Sad, creepy and filled with secrets. This is a story of how the past doesn’t stay buried and what people will do for revenge. The overlap between the main mystery and John’s story gives this book extra heft and interest.

THE STORY: Kate Burkholder. chief of police in a small town, and her team are called to an apparent suicide. A man hanging from the rafters of his barn seems obvious but quickly the investigation turns to murder when it is discovered that the man was shot. His murder seems connected an 35 year old crime — the horrendous murders that decimated most of an Amish family. It seems like a ghost has come back for revenge. At the same time, Kate’s personal life seems to be going well until her lover John gets news that one of the men connected with the death of his family has gone free.

OPINION: This book excels because of the connection between the revenge crime Kate is investigating and John’s own feelings for revenge. This book is all about how the past never really dies. Kate and John are in a good place as this book begins, but the crisis that arises shows that there are still problems that they have with trust. Kate doesn’t trust John not to seek revenge — because he has before — and John cannot truly talk with Kate. There are some very interesting parallels with the investigation (I won’t say more to not give away spoilers). These connections raise this book to a level beyond a standard mystery.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes place six months after the previous book in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE DEAD WILL TELL is the sixth book in the Kate Burkholder series. It can be read as a standalone although there are some ongoing stories which are secondary to the main mystery.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Review: My American Duchess

My American Duchess
My American Duchess by Eloisa James
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lovely, Surprising and Deeply Emotional

“He had been staring into the dark garden when he had felt a touch on his arm turned — and met her.”

FINAL DECISION: Immensely likeable characters and a story filled with depth and surprises makes MY AMERICAN DUCHESS a keeper for me.

THE STORY: The Duke of Trent is as proper as one might expect from an English peer of the realm and is expected to marry a well-bred English miss. One conversation with the exuberant Miss Merry Pelford, an American heiress, and Trent is thinking something different might do for him. Merry is completely inappropriate to be a duchess. She keeps making social mistakes. She is too friendly with servants. She doesn’t have proper respect for the social hierarchy. She has also been engaged twice in America and jilted the men both times. What makes her completely unsuitable, however, is that on the night Trent and Merry meet, she has just become betrothed to Trent’s twin brother.

OPINION: Merry is a woman who has cried “love” so many times that she cannot be trusted when she says “love” for real. Full of life, emotion and joy, Merry has been searching for the kind of love that her deceased parents had. Instead, she has fallen into a series of infatuations which threaten her reputation because of her string of broken engagements. I loved how Merry is. In less talented hands, her character might seem superficial, but instead her character just seems full of life and willing to risk all for love. Clever, funny, caring and filled with joy, Merry is one of my favorite heroines. She always errs on the side of caring for others even to her own detriment.

Trent is just adorable. On the outside, he seems the stereotypical duke but has a soft gooey center. From the beginning, he wants Merry and only his loyalty to her brother stops him from pursuing her. This is a book where I thought the blurb was a bit misleading. Trent expects that he will find a proper English lady but from the absolute beginning, he accepts and is attracted to Merry’s joy and unconventional nature.

There is a turn and surprise in this book which involves how Merry ends up not engaged to Trent’s brother. I don’t want to give away the story, but readers might suspect that ultimately Trent and Merry end up together. James masterfully takes these characters deeper into relationship. Their relationship begins as attraction and seems to develop into a satisfying relationship but then they find there relationship can be deeper and it does. Infatuation, attraction, lust, friendship, companionship and deep love. This book explores those emotions through these characters. Complex and multi-faceted, these characters made me cheer for them.

This book is funny and clever and ultimately just made me feel good because both Trent and Merry are so likeable. As an American, I also must say that I just loved how Merry turns English society upside down and changes Trent’s world in ways he never imagined.

WORTH MENTIONING: Who knew that there were such things as rented pineapples?

CONNECTED BOOKS: MY AMERICAN DUCHESS is a standalone book although it exists in the same world as James’ other novels.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Very Angst Filled Action Suspense

“She’d thought she’d felt pain over the years. Grief. Regret. She didn’t think it could get any worse than what she’d already been dealt. She was wrong.”

FINAL DECISION: I found this story heartbreaking. There was so much angst and pain and sadness for this couple that I wish there could have been more time for the horrible past to be put behind them and for their happiness to be shown. I felt the resolution occurred too quickly for the darkness that encompasses much of the book.

THE STORY: Zach Covington works for Deveraux Security and is haunted by the disappearance of the girl he loved twelve years ago. He loved Gracie with a singular passion. When he sees a painting, he knows that Gracie is the artist. Anna-Grace Hill loved Zach until she believed herself betrayed by him in the worst way. When a chance encounter reunites them, Zach and Anna-Grace have to struggle through the lies and horrible tragedy that separated them twelve years ago to see if there is any future for them.

OPINION: Zach and Gracie have an epic romance but this story was so filled angst and pain and betrayal and sadness that I had a hard time getting through parts of it. I was pleased that things turned out well in the end, but I think that because of the depth of the darkness in the book, the resolution between Zach and Gracie needed to be more prolonged. After the disclosure of what happened twelve years ago, the two just picked up again. That didn’t work for me because it seemed like the two needed to work up to their happiness in order for it to feel real next to the blackness of the past.

I did love Zach’s dedication to Gracie and I thought the suspense story that continued from the second book in the series was well done and kept the story moving. I liked this book, but I thought that it bordered on being a very, very good book but that the transition to the happy ending didn’t work as well for me.

WORTH MENTIONING: I can’t wait for the story of the next couple. They have a stunning debut in this book (no spoilers as to who they are).

CONNECTED BOOKS: SAFE AT LAST is the third book in the Slow Burn series. This book can be read as a standalone although it does have a continuing storyline from book two in the series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Action Packed Paranormal Romance

“Love finds you when you least expect it.”

THE STORY: Arial “Ari” Rochester is a telekinetic who has spent most of her young life hiding her abilities. When he ends up using them to save her life, her secret is out. When her life is threatened, she ends up coming to Beau Devereaux for help. Beau’s job with Devereaux Security makes him the perfect person to protect Ari and to discover what is happening. At the same time, Beau and Ari end up falling in love. But the danger that surrounds Ari might end their romance before it has a real chance to begin.

OPINION: This is a high powered action packed paranormal romance. To me, however, the romance seemed to take a back seat to the serious action in the novel. I very much enjoyed how Ari becomes a real powerful character. Although Beau is definitely an alpha male, Ari is a woman that grows into a strong woman who can take care of her man as well. The romance is more simple than might be expected. There are no dramatics between Beau and Ari. They, in fact, almost too quickly take to one another in a serious manner. The conflicts in this story involve those who are trying to abduct Ari and thus that is the source of conflict in the story. Beau is also a character that I really like because he allows himself to be vulnerable about Ari to the extent that he is willing to show his grief and fear about her openly to others.

WORTH MENTIONING: Although this series has three books, I hope there is a chance that there might be more because there are some other interesting possibilities for stories.

FINAL DECISION: I liked this book although not as much as the first in the series. The book felt much more like suspense/paranormal because the romance was more muted. Beau and Ari were a nice couple, but their conflicts were all external ones.

CONNECTED BOOKS: IN HIS KEEPING is the second book in the Slow Burn series. Although the events of the prior book are mentioned, this book can be read independent of the first book in the series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Spooky and Sexy Paranormal Romance

KEEP ME SAFE is the first book in the Slow Burn Trilogy. The series tells the stories of the Devereaux siblings. Each story has a paranormal element and are also in the suspense genre.

THE STORY: Caleb Devereaux is desperate when his younger sister is kidnapped so he tracks down Ramie St. Claire who he knows has helped locate missing people before. Ramie has disappeared and Caleb believes her selfish for not being willing to help others. When he finds her, Caleb forces Ramie to help him but what he discovers is that her paranormal talent that allows her to find missing people takes an extraordinary toll as Ramie experiences all the fears and emotions of the missing person. Caleb is remorseful and promises to make it up to her, but when he returns, Ramie has disappeared. A year later, Ramie contacts Caleb because she knows that a psychic serial killer is stalking her. Caleb, who hasn’t been able to forget Ramie, is immediately protective and determined to take care of Ramie.

OPINION: I have mixed feelings about this book. I really liked the characters. Caleb and Ramie are a good couple and have an immediate connection. Ramie is a woman who is at the end of her rope. She is desperate and fragile in many ways. Some readers may believe her too weak to be a heroine, but I see her as an incredibly strong woman who has been pushed to her breaking point. I liked how the Devereaux family interacts together and I look forward to the other books in the trilogy.

This book, however, depicts violent events and is not for those who don’t like violent images. The violence is not that graphic, but there are serious depictions of rape, abuse and extreme violence. There is a horrible event near the end of the book that was difficult to read (I don’t want to give away spoilers, but it breaks many of the romance rules about heroes). I ultimately was alright with the scene, but I felt that the resolution between the hero and heroine was too brief. It seemed to me that there would have to be more emotional work between the couple in order to overcome the event. The failure to seriously deal with the repercussions of the event downgraded this book for me. Hopefully, readers will get more in the future books in the trilogy that will allow some closure to this story.

WORTH MENTIONING: There are depictions of rape and its aftermath so readers should be forewarned.

FINAL DECISION: I was somewhat disappointed in the ending of this book even though I thought the suspense was great and the book’s plot went in directions I did not expect. I think there needed to be a more serious exploration of the reactions to the horrible events that occurred in the book. I did, however, really like the characters and I was totally interested in the story throughout.

CONNECTED BOOKS: KEEP ME SAFE is the first book in the Slow Burn series.

STAR RATING: I give this 4 stars because I thought the ending was too rushed for the extreme events that preceded it.

Novella Prequel to Psy-Changeling Series

THE STORY: Ria Wembly is attacked. She is saved by leopard shapeshifters known as changlings. Emmett is a leopard changeling and he immediately knows that Ria is important to him. He is determined to find out who is trying to hurt Ria and to eliminate that threat. Emmett is possessive and dominating and Ria lives with a family that has tried to control her for too long. Can she deal with Emmett?

OPINION: I liked this novella. Singh has created an interesting world and set of characters and I look forward to reading the actual novels in the series. The story between Ria and Emmett is fast and intense. I really enjoyed the glimpses into her family who are a unique bunch. I recommend this novella whether or not you have read the other books in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING: I read this book before any of the major novels in the series. While I suspect that there are lots of cameos by characters that appear in the series, I did not feel that I had missed anything. I understood what was happening in the story.

FINAL DECISION: I enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read the full length novels in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: This novella is 0.6 of the Psy-Changeling series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Great Set of Four Psy-Changeling Novellas

WILD INVITATION consists of four novellas about the Psy-Changeling world. The first two stories are about secondary characters in the DarkRiver leopard pack and the second two stories are about secondary characters in the SnowDancer wolf pack. Overall rating: 4.25 stars.

BEAT OF TEMPTATION: This novella is a prequel to the Psy-Changeling series. It is the story of the DarkRiver leopard healer Tamsyn and Nathan Ryder, a sentinel. Although Tamsyn and Nathan are destined to be mates, Nathan refuses to approach Tamsyn because he wants her to have a chance to explore and consider life before settling down. Tamsyn is angry at Nathan because she wants him now and doesn’t appreciate him deciding what is right for her. A prequel to the series, the events of this novella occur before SLAVE TO SENSATION. I liked the romance between Tamsyn and Nathan. I read this novella before any other book in the series and understood exactly what was happening. Rating: 4.25 stars.

STROKE OF ENTICEMENT: This novella is the story of Annie Kildaire, a human and Zach Quinn, a leopard changeling. Annie is a schoolteacher for changeling cubs. The drama in the story is around Annie’s fears of having a long term relationship with Zach because she fears that he will tire of her and abandon her. I liked this story although it was the least memorable of the collection for me. Rating: 4 stars.

DECLARATION OF COURTSHIP: This novella is the story of a dominant SnowDancer wolf lieutenant Cooper and the sweet submissive wolf Grace who catches his interest. The couple’s courtship was mentioned in PLAY OF PASSION and this novella gives their story. Cooper is determined to court Grace but she worries that her submissive nature will ruin any relationship they may have. I really liked this story because the relationship is different from the others in the main novels of the series and gives a different view of what dominant and submissive is in the changeling world. I smiled at this story because Cooper does the hard sell in courting Grace with tons of gifts and sexy, naughty notes. A sweet addition to the series. Rating: 4.25 stars.

TEXTURE OF INTIMACY: This novella continues the romance between Lara, the SnowDancer healer and Walker Lauren, Psy defector. Their romance was detailed as a secondary romance in KISS OF SNOW. This novella begins after the events in KISS OF SNOW. Here Lara and Walker are mated but are learning to live together and build a life. Sweet and beautiful and more a love letter to the entire series, I enjoyed this story as a coda to KISS OF SNOW. It gives readers a chance to focus on Lara and Walker and to demonstrate that they have an honest happily ever after. This story was my favorite because I was already invested in Lara and Walker’s story and was happy that they got extra time. Rating: 4.5.

Intense, Emotional Romance. First, a warning. The main characters in this book: Godric St. John and Lady Margaret both have been in love before. Some readers may not like that neither prior love was venal or unworthy. These are two characters who loved before and are not looking for love again. But that is one of the reasons that I love this book. The characters struggle with feeling of betrayal and uncertainty. Hoyt always manages to expose the flaws and emotions of her characters. I always feel like I know her characters and that is one reason why I find her books so compelling. Even when her characters make poor decisions and mistakes, I still understand them — even when I don’t have sympathy for them. That makes a great read for me. I believe these characters. When they change and come to love one another, I feel that I have been on the journey with them and I am happy to have spent time with them. As the fifth book in the Maiden Lane series, I was smiling when my favorite couple in the series — Hero and Griffin (from the second book of the series, Notorious Pleasures) make an extended appearance. Loved, loved. loved this book!
