NOBODY’S BABY BUT MINE is the third novel in Phillips’ Chicago Stars series. Jane Darlington is at the crossroads of her life. A genius, she has never fit in. At thirty-four, she desperately wants a child of her own. That desperation leads her to decide to masquerade as a prostitute in order to trick Chicago Stars quarterback Cal Bonner into fathering her child. Cal is also at a crossroads in his life. He is thirty-six and while it is obvious that his career is coming to an end, Cal refuses to accept it. When he finds out that Jane is pregnant, he is furious, but insists on marriage to protect the child. The two end up traveling to Cal’s hometown where their relationship becomes more complicated.

Upfront I want to say that I really found the premise distasteful and it made it difficult to like Jane. The first time that I read this book, I could not accept the premise and it colored by view of the entire book. As I read the book again, however, I was able to accept the premise as part of the exaggerated, melodramatic style that Phillips employs in this series. With that aside, I enjoyed these characters who are witty and strong and are a perfect match to one another. The battle of wills between them made me laugh and the resolution was hard fought and heartwarming.

I’d rate this a 4.5.

Emotional, Intensely Sensual. THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR FIRST TWO BOOKS!

Please Don’t Read This Review If You Don’t Want to Be Spoiled About the First Two Books of the Series.

“The man I loved had killed for me. A lot of things become inconsequential after a sacrifice like that.”

FINAL DECISION: I found this book deeply emotional with great movement in the relationship between Gideon and Eva. It truly feels like they have entered a new phase in their relationship. While still a work in progress, the two have a new level of closeness which makes this book feel the most optimistic of the series so far.

THE STORY: As readers of the series know, Gideon Cross and Eva Tramell have had a difficult relationship. Both are survivors of childhood sexual abuse which has damaged them and made it difficult to fully engage in their relationship. Trust and communication are problems for them both. This book begins right after the end of book 2 and the revelation that Gideon has murdered Eva’s rapist. This event ripples through Gideon and Eva’s relationship both bringing them closer together and placing additional barriers between them.

OPINION: I am constantly surprised by how engaging I find these books. The events are just crazy and the relationship between Eva and Gideon feels glacial at times. This book feels like a breakthrough. Finally, they have moved beyond some of their problems (but things are not all good yet). There is a new level of emotional maturity and connection between the characters that makes this book feel like a breath of fresh air.

As a late comer to this series, I have the advantage of knowing that there are five books in the series and that there is more drama to come. Many readers expected a trilogy and thus this book was a disappointment to them. For me, however, this book feels like an island of unexpected peace in this series. There is joy and happiness to be found and not just drama and pain and sadness.

It is the combination of all the emotions that makes this series so compelling to me. Here are two people who have so much baggage that they probably should have given up on one another long ago. Instead, they have such a deep connection to one another that it compels them to fight through all their pain and sadness to be together.

WORTH MENTIONING: I especially liked that the stories of the secondary characters are also progressing in this series. There are some big reveals in this book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ENTWINED WITH YOU is the third book in the Crossfire series. It is intended to be read as part of the series. Following one couple, the book relies upon knowledge in the first two books and this book does not complete the story.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Crazy Plot, Crazy Story And I Reluctantly Loved It

“Our relationship was swiftly becoming a minefield of words left unsaid and secrets not shared.”

FINAL DECISION: The plot is crazy and these two people are incredibly messed up and thus continue to muddle their way through a largely disfunctional relationship, but I find the entirety of the book so compelling that I can’t help but turn pages and then buy the next book. I can’t decide if it is like watching a train wreck or a soap opera.

THE STORY: PLEASE DON’T READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE FIRST BOOK IF YOU MIND SPOILERS!!

This book continues the story of Gideon Cross and Eva Tramell who met and began a sexual and emotional relationship in book one of the series. The two both experienced childhood sexual abuse which has not been well dealt with. Each has serious problems because of the abuse which effects their ability to engage and sustain a relationship on an emotional level. Gideon and Eva’s relationship is threatened by Gideon’s continued refusal to talk about his past and his keeping secrets from Eva. Eva acts out and almost sabotages the relationship as well. Past loves and their abuse continue to break them apart.

OPINION: This book has a plot but I especially liked that the entirety of the story is keep revealed until the last couple of pages. Because the book is told in first person from Eva’s point of view, Gideon’s motivations remain concealed until the end. For me, I was surprised by what was happening in the margins of this book. In beginning this book, readers should understand that this story is about the internal change of these characters more than the plot. As a result, progress between these two is slow and often times feels glacial with many setbacks. I think that because I know that there are five books in the series, the pace of the relationship change doesn’t bother me. This is definitely a long term project. This book also slips into a crazy plot that is compelling but unbelievable. On the other hand, the problems that these two abuse survivors face feels more real than books where all the past is neatly resolved in 400 pages.

WORTH MENTIONING: Less sex in this book than in the first (which seemed to have a sexual scene on every other page) but that is a good thing.

CONNECTED BOOKS: REFLECTED IN YOU is the second book in the Crossfire series. It should not be read out of order. This series needs to be read in order as it tells one complete story.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Surprisingly Compelling Start to Continuing Romance Series

FINAL DECISION: I didn’t have high expectations for this book, but I ended up really liking this story of two seriously damaged people who find one another and stumble their way through beginning a relationship with one another. The book had more depth than I expected.

THE STORY: Eva Tramell has moved to New York and begun a new job when she meets Gideon Cross, filthy rich and gorgeous. Gideon, at first wants Eva for some recreational no commitment sex, but when Eva refuses him, Gideon cannot forget Eva and so begins to make concessions to be with Eva. Both Gideon and Eva are damaged people whose pasts still haunt them and influence their relationships. This book is only the beginning of the romance which continues in subsequent books.

OPINION: It’s a good thing that Eva and Gideon have several subsequent books to work on their relationship because the two are pretty messed up as the series begins. I initially did not have high expectations for this book because I read that it was in the vein of 50 Shades of Gray. I thought this book was so much more. Eva and Gideon both have demons in their pasts. As a result, their attempts at having a relationship are frustrating because neither is good at relationships. Their relationship has fits and starts as they draw together and then break apart as they allow their pasts to come between them. This push and pull works here because with every mistake, the two end up drawing closer together. Much is left unresolved by the end of this book and thus one needs to continue to read the series. There are five books total in the series and things are not going to be resolved until the final book so readers should be willing to accept unfinished storylines.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book begins the romance between Gideon and Eva but readers should be prepared to commit to the other four books in the series. Much is left unresolved and unknown by the end of this book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: BARED TO YOU is the first book in the Crossfire series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Review: Highland Rogue

Funny, with a Twist on the Classic Governess Story

FINAL DECISION: A quirky old school romance with a hero with four illegitimate daughters, a heroine who is an indentured servant who lies to get a job as the governess, HIGHLAND ROGUE has a crazy plot and a super romance.

THE STORY: Juliet White, an indentured servant from Virginia comes to Scotland to find her sister’s daughter. Masquerading as a governess, Juliet enters the household of Lachlan MacKenzie, Duke of Ross who has four illegitimate daughters — one of whom might be Juliet’s niece. Juliet tries to find out Lachlan’s secrets while avoiding the randy Scotsman’s charms.

OPINION: A hero with four illegitimate children conceived at around the same time is an unlikely hero and yet Lamb makes it work. The hero is imperfect and has made serious mistakes, but the book allows the readers to see real growth in Lachlan. I also really liked Juliet who reluctantly falls for Lachlan as she discovers depths to him she did not expect and also she falls for his daughters. She is smart, clever and dedicated. There are so many characters and yet this book does a great job of giving each of them a distinct personality. I especially liked the daughters’ characters and can see why this book led to a trilogy with Lachlans’ daughters romances.

I thought this book was fun, sensual and filled with emotions and surprises. The characters are interesting and the story kept me engaged.

I only have a small complaint and that is when Juliet’s big secret is ultimately revealed, it is resolved too easily and quickly to be taken seriously as a big impediment to Lachlan and Juliet’s happiness.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book has an interesting mix of historical information one might not expect to be found together combining New World indenture and Highland history.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HIGHLAND ROGUE is the prequel to the Clan Mackenzie Trilogy which tells the stories of Lachlan’s daughters. The book is also a spinoff of THREADS OF DESTINY but you don’t need to read that book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Conclusion to the ALPHA series with a Tighter Story

FINAL DECISION: The ALPHA series concludes with a sexy little story of an actress and the man who is protecting her from a stalker. I enjoyed this book although the romance is pretty uncomplicated and the characters are no deep, but the tightness of the story makes this a good one time read.

THE STORY: Lily Knight is an actress who is being stalked by an increasingly dangerous and obsessed fan. Her older brother calls in a favor to have his friend Jonas Grayfeather to protect her. Jonas is a half Apache, half English American. The two have an attraction that is complicated by Jonas’s solitary nature and the danger surrounding her.

OPINION: I have enjoyed the ALPHA series which are generally hot books. This book is no exception as the heat is high between Lily and Jonas. I thought their characters were interesting although because of the length and style of the book, the characters are not deep or complex. For the length and style of this book, I enjoyed it because the entire story and characters made sense and the story felt complete and satisfying.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book introduces the Knight family which will be the focus of another series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: SAVAGE ALPHA is the eighth book in the ALPHA series. It can be read as a standalone book although there are appearances by characters from prior books.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

“Since she’s been gone, Claire had obviously developed the ability to hide her emotions. In the kind of world where she had been living, she would have had to do so to survive.  But in that moment after she shouted out her secret, War saw everything she’d been fighting to hide. Her pain was so clear, it might have been tattooed across her face in words like grief, terror, and anguish.”

FINAL DECISION: A satisfying resolution of the mystery regarding Claire that has dominated the Wicked Woodleys series.  I absolutely loved Claire and War who are strong and compelling characters.  My new all time favorite by Jess Michaels.

THE STORY: Claire Woodley made a terrible mistake two years ago.  The aristocratic daughter ran off to marry a man who turned out to be a liar, a thief and extremely dangerous rogue.  Avoiding her family who has been searching for her, Claire has immersed herself in the underworld where her lover lives.  Finally, she has emerged and seeks the help of the Woodley horsemaster Warrick Blackwood to retrieve something that her lover stole from her. War has wanted Claire for years, even though he rejected her attempt to seduce him two years ago.  Claire’s request for help requires him to confront his own past and perhaps sacrifice his future, but he cannot resist her.

OPINION: I absolutely loved this book.  Claire is a woman with a scandalous past, a desperate present, and only a vague future.  Throughout the series, readers have been teased with hints of what motivated Claire, what her current situation is and questions as to why she has not returned to her family.  I’m pleased to say that this book provides a satisfying resolution while still providing a hot, sexy and suspenseful story.  Thankfully, Michaels doesn’t make readers wait long to discover one of her big secrets.  Even better, the hot romance between Claire and the man she wanted but who rejected her, War gets off to a fast and torrid start.

War becomes an intriguing hero because he is a good man who has dark secrets.  This gives him a complexity that makes him interesting and worth reading about.  I especially like how he orchestrates the reunion of the Woodleys.  He truly cares for the family and he is a good man who is willing to risk much to help Claire.  War rejected Claire for her own good once and that ended up in Claire’s running off with a con man.  Now that Claire is not so innocent, War is determined not to let the possibility of being with Claire slip by him again.  War is sexy, earthy and complicated.

War and Claire together are combative, emotional and a perfect pair.  The two work together to solve Claire’s problem and end up discovering that their pasts have ended up making them an ideal match for one another in a way that wouldn’t have been possible before Claire’s downfall.

One of my favorite parts of the Wicked Woodleys series has been the cross-social class romances.  For those who like more historically accurate romances, this may not be the story for you.  This series tends more toward erotic sexual encounters and the morals of the characters feel more modern.  For me, however, I love this type of historical book where the time and setting provide texture and substance to the story but where the actual execution of the story has more of a romanticized fairy tale feel to it.  If I want pure historical accuracy, I read historical fiction not romance.

I enjoyed the plot of the book which was suspenseful and worked to provide an opportunity for the relationship between War and Claire to develop and deepen as te two depend upon one another and discover all the secrets each are hiding.  I read through this book in record time and immediately went back to reread passages.  For me, that is the primary indicator of a book that I will reread again and again in the years ahead.  A book that exceeded my expectations!

WORTH MENTIONING: Oh, I can’t wait until Jack’s book.  That’s how an author builds a great series by having compelling characters that demand their own stories be told.

CONNECTED BOOKS: RUINED is the fourth book in the Wicked Woodleys series.  This book can be read as a standalone, but is so much more fulfilling after reading the stories of Claire’s siblings.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Great Conclusion to the Manwhore Series

“I love single-Rachel. But she was never as happy as I am now.”

FINAL DECISION: This novella is really an extended epilogue to the series. I greatly appreciated the time to see Malcolm and Rachel happy. It gave me a better appreciation for the other two books in the series because I got to see this couple truly happy.

THE STORY: Rachel and Malcolm have weathered their storms together and now are moving toward marriage. Dealing with the announcements, the bachelor party, the wedding dress and all the other things that accompanying merging together two lives are things the two now have to deal with. Will Rachel have the wedding of her dreams with the man she loves?

OPINION: I greatly appreciate that the author wrote this novella. I love seeing the happy ending for couples and this novella allows the entire happy ending to play out in a satisfying way. In many ways, I liked these characters better here than in the two previous novels because in this novella they are genuinely happy and the only drama is from the normal wedding issues. After the drama and stress of the previous two novels, it was nice to see these two characters be happy. This novella is really for fans of the series since there is no storyline that needs resolving other than the marriage itself. For fans of the series, however, this is mandatory reading.

WORTH MENTIONING: There is a new romance in the air.

CONNECTED BOOKS: MS. MANWHORE is the third book in the Manwhore series. It concludes the story of Malcolm and Rachel. The romance is already concluded by the time this novella opens. This is a nice long epilogue to the series so readers should start with the first book.

STAR RATING: I give this novella 4.5 stars.

War Has Finally Arrived

“Eternity would mean nothing without you. For no power on this earth would I trade my Elena.”

THE STORY: Guild Hunter turned angel Elena and her lover Archangel Raphael begin preparing for the archangelic war that is coming. Strange, destructive occurrences begin happening: angels falling from the sky, rivers filled with blood and vampires dying of diseases that should not exist. It will take all of their friends and allies together along with their strong relationship in order the defeat the evil that is overshadowing New York.

OPINION: After two books about the people around Elena and Raphael, this book returns to the power couple of New York. Powerful, dramatic and sexy, this book shows the growth that Elena and Raphael have made in their relationship. This book is filled with action because war is coming to New York and this book doesn’t shy away from depictions of the battles. While not overly graphic, it is more so than other books in the series. I was also very interested in the developments in Elena’s relationship with her father and siblings. Revelations about the past provide context and understanding for Elena’s father. I liked that Singh is still finding new information to give us about Elena and Raphael.

WORTH MENTIONING: My new favorite character is Naasir. Singh has done such a great job tempting the reader with the mystery surrounding this guy.

FINAL DECISION: I loved this book. Powerful, I especially like that real progress is made on the overarching story of the series at the same time Elena and Raphael’s relationship evolves. Also loved seeing all the characters in the series make an appearance.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ARCHANGEL’S LEGION is the sixth book in the Guild Hunter series. This book is the culmination of the storyline of the other books in the series and therefore depends upon the knowledge gained in those books. I think that readers should just start at book one and read on.

A Trip to The Ripped Bodice: A Romance Bookstore

Several months ago, I contributed a small amount to a Kickstarter campaign for a specialty romance bookstore right here in Los Angeles.  I don’t buy many physical books these days having converted to reading ebooks almost entirely.

I wanted to support The Ripped Bodice for several reasons: (1) I would love to be able to attend author signings which are hard to find around here; (2) I love the idea of there being a place where I can get recommendations and discuss romance books with knowledgeable people and (3) there are so many specialty bookstores — why shouldn’t there be a romance one?

I’ve been following Bea and Leah’s progress on the store after the successful Kickstarter campaign at @TheRippedBodice.  The store’s Grand Opening is March 4th and 5th, but I was thrilled to see that they are conducting a soft opening this week.  Having a quiet Sunday, I rushed down to see the store in person.

The store in located in a nice area of Culver City with plenty of nearby parking.  20160228_115648 (Medium)

The Ripped Bodice is painted a cute pink color on the outside and is white on the inside which allows the books to be the stars.  And there are so many romance books of all types and genres including historical, contemporary, young adult, paranormal and erotica.  They also have a smattering of books in Spanish and even have books on the romance genre itself. (I am sure I’ve missed other groupings but it was too much to absorb in one trip).

I think my favorite part of the store is that the books are arranged differently than in other stores.  For example, the historical romances are in order of time period then author.  So all the Regencies are together, all the Victorians, etc.  For the paranormal romances, Vampire lovers, witch lovers, Shifter fans can find all their books together.  What I like best about this is that it allows me to find books in a different way other than author.  Whether I feel like a witch romance today or I want to find a book similar to an author I already read, this upsetting of the standard shelving arrangement made me look at the books differently.

The store is fun but tasteful and elegant.  I appreciated Bea and Leah who were friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.  I didn’t have any specific books that I was looking for so I asked for recommendations for a contemporary and a paranormal, Several choices for each genre were suggested after questioning about my own tastes.   I can’t remember ever getting that kind of service for romances at a bookstore.

I walked away with three books (I had already decided to get a Jennifer Ashley historical).

There are cute little pink receipts! (You can see the corner of mine in the above photo).

I will return next weekend for the Grand Opening events.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this store because I believed in its concept and after seeing it live, I think this could be something special.
